About Greg

I’ve been an Alaskan since 1959, the year we became a state, and have lived in Juneau for 34 years. Whether it’s fishing my halibut IFQ, skiing at Eaglecrest, or taking in a Jazz and Classics event, I love Juneau and all the wonderful opportunities it has to offer. I raised my son here, and my grandson just started kindergarten in our public school system. I want to keep Juneau a safe and prosperous place for them, and others in their generations, to live, learn, work, and play.

Public service is a great way for individual citizens to make a difference. Working on various boards and committees has shown me just how important active leadership is for our community. My roles have included:

  • CBJ Docks & Harbors Board (10 years);
  • Juneau Economic Development Council Board (6 years);
  • CBJ Fisheries Development Committee (9 years, current member);
  • Downtown Business Association Board (4 years, current member).

Are we tehre yet?...Innovative, realistic answers for our problems and opportunities are a must for Juneau in these uncertain economic times. Throughout my public service and private sector development career, I have found real solutions to tough problems:

  • Was a principal architect of Alaska’s Fisheries Revitalization Program, which provided $35 million in grants to Alaska fishermen for marketing and technological innovation;
  • Spearheaded a CBJ taskforce showing how the city can bring 170 high-paying NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center jobs from Seattle to Juneau;
  • Won a $3.62 million grant award for the Auke Bay Loading Facility;
  • Contributed substantially to planning of Juneau’s new cruise ship docks (starting construction this winter), including the financing concept that got the project moving.

Are we there yet?...These examples illustrate the kind of results-oriented thinking I bring to my work. That is what we need to strengthen critical sectors of our economy and keep our people working. As your Mayor, I will bring this positive, progressive approach to all the economic challenges we face -housing, revitalizing downtown, attracting new businesses- to make Juneau the best possible Capital City for Alaska.
